Halo: Combat Evolved
In Halo’s twenty-sixth century setting, the player assumes the role of the Master Chief, a cybernetically enhanced super-soldier. The player is accompanied by Cortana, an artificial intelligence who occupies the Master Chief’s neural interface. Players battle various aliens on foot and in vehicles as they attempt to uncover the secrets of the eponymous Halo, a ring-shaped artificial planet.

One could argue that this is the beginning of John Halo
A solid game
Oops wrong game
Evolved is right. The combat in the first Halo is revolutionary. Unlike previous games in the shooter genre, where every gun was a key, and every enemy a door full of organs with a specific lock, Halo instead reduced your arsenal and made every weapon effective in combat. The effectiveness would vary, of course, with plasma weapons being better suited against shields, and UNSC weapons having great stopping power against the unshielded. The moment to moment combat in Halo is more akin to a rhythm game then a “boomer-shooter”, and the versatility of each weapon and load-out allows the player to craft their experience however they wish. For example, they could replay the level, The Library, over and over and over, using only melee and grenades to defeat the virulent hordes of Flood. In fact, they can play any level of Halo using only melee and grenades, and it is still a valid strategy for beating the game. Halo is a once in a lifetime release. No other game can or will ever compare to it. Not until the next stage of evolution.
